AstraZeneca is developing a new cholesterol-lowering drug, Zetia, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. AstraZeneca, the UK-listed partner for Zetia, will offer a cheaper, more effective treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug is designed to be used in combination with diet and exercise in patients who do not respond adequately to a diet and exercise regimen. The drug will also reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. The product will be produced by AstraZeneca.
“It is important that our drug is well-designed and that it is safe and effective for patients with diabetes,” AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer, Pascal Soriot, said in a statement. “By focusing on the mechanisms of action of Zetia, AstraZeneca will contribute to a greater understanding of the drug’s benefits and potential risks for patients.”
Zetia is in the early stages of trials with its first treatment for Type 2 diabetes, Glucotrol. The product will be available in two strengths: 25mg and 50mg. The cost of the drug is around $3,000 per patient.
The first two trials were conducted in the UK, which will take place between May 2014 and April 2015.
The drug is also approved in the US for primary care use and for the treatment of primary dyslipidemia.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “This is the first study to show that the treatment of patients with diabetes can be successful in treating people with type 2 diabetes.”

How should this medicine be used?
